About Gwalior City


Gwalior is a historical city. Its foundation is laid by king surajesan. It was the princely state of Madhya Pradesh. It is renowned for its temples, Fort, wonderful palaces and magnificent monuments.

The attractions in the city also include Gwalior’s history which can be dated back to the 8th century .it is believed that this city has been named after the name of the saint ‘saint gwalipa’ who had cured the deadly disease of the king. Many great dynasties have existed in this city over many centuries.

With magnificent structures such as rock cut temples, sandstone mosque and outstanding statues enhances the superb custom of the past. The majestic fort on the magnificent hills gives an alluring view of the extraordinary sight of the wonderful town. These extravagant monuments of the past years give an incomparable magnetism to this amazing and fabulous city.

Leaving aside these museums and heritages, Gwalior is always remembered as the native land of the great musician – Tansen . The artistic event "TANSEN SAMAROH" held in Gwalior each year in winters to honor the legendary musician attracts large crowds. The stalwarts of music accept this as a great opportunity to be a part of this artistic festival. This Event Celebrate 2 to 3 days. It has been a dream city for many dynasties. Who had devoted their full strength for its development. An extensive city where custom is entangled with modernity. Gwalior represents an enchanting and mesmerizing appeal to its visitors.


History
According to the views of historians during the 6th century Gwalior was under the rule of Hunas. Later on it was captured by gurjar pratiharas of Kannauj whose reign remained here till A.D 923.after wards in the 10th century the empire went under the rule of kushwaha rajputs.

In 1196 the Gwalior city came under the dominance of Delhi sultanate . When Qutub-Uddin Aibak took its control in his hand. After Qutub-Uddin the throne of Gwalior came under the control of Shams-uddin-Altamash in 1232. The fabulous Gwalior fort was built in 15th century by raja man Singh of tomar dynasty.

One famous singing school was also established here during 15th century and the renowned musician Tansen attended this school. Gwalior was ruled under Muslim dominance till 1553 A.D later on it came under the power of Vikramaditya who later defeated Akbar’s army n 1556 and conquered north India.

The city came under the control of the British in 1780 and remained in  their hand for a long time . The city of Gwalior has been the most active domain during the first war of independence which was fought in 1857. Rani Lakshmi Bai known as Jhansi ki Rani sacrificed herself while fighting with the British.

Gwalior is a holy place for both jain and Sikhs. And so attracts the pilgrims from both the religions for pilgrimage .


Geography

The geographical location of Gwalior is 26°13′N 78°11′E / 26.22°N 78.18°E / 26.22; 78.18  .the average altitude of Gwalior is 197 meters (646 feet) . It is a historical city situated at the edge of Madhya Pradesh. it is 500 km far from Delhi which is the capital city of India.
